Group home to college: Youths to pursue dreams after graduation

This time of year is very exciting for some of the youth at Banff Trail Group Home as they prepare to transition out of the program and into independence. To celebrate, we want to highlight some of the youth who have been accepted into post-secondary programs for Fall 2021.

(To maintain the youths’ privacy, names have been changed to their initials.)

K.C. — Delmar College of Hair and Esthetics

K.C. is a driven young woman who we have had the pleasure of watching grow for the past two years.

When K.C. received the news that she had been accepted into Delmar College of Hair and Esthetics, she was in the waiting room of a doctor’s office with program staff. She was so overjoyed to hear the good news that she just had to tell anyone and everyone around her!

K.C. excitedly told the doctor that she had been accepted into college and went on to explain the program she would be taking in the fall. She was so full of light and energy as she proudly shared her story!

K.C. has worked hard to pursue her dream of becoming an Esthetician and will do amazing in the program!

H.A. — SAIT Engineering

H.A. is a confident, intelligent young man who will be taking engineering classes this summer through SAIT. H.A. will do great and has an exciting future ahead of him!

H.A. has said on multiple occasions that he "has big goals and big dreams", and being accepted to post-secondary school is just one step closer to achieving those.

S.P. — University of Calgary Indigenous Student Access Program

I’m happy because I will be the first one in my family to ever attend university or even graduate from high school.
— S.P., youth at Banff Trail Group Home

After a challenging year and overcoming many hurdles, S.P. was accepted into the University of Calgary in the Indigenous Student Access Program (ISAP).

S.P.'s mother passed away at the beginning of the year, and he says that his mother would have been so proud of him for achieving this goal.

"I'm happy because I will be the first one in my family to ever attend university or even graduate from high school,” S.P. says.

SP intends to switch into the education program and become a teacher, and we will be cheering him on the whole way!

Congratulations to all these incredible young people! We are so proud of everything they’ve achieved and wish them all the best in their journeys!
